Fletcher, environmentalists push plastic bag ban
A coalition of environmental advocates, elected officials and grocery store representatives gathered Tuesday in San Diego to announce their support for a statewide prohibition on plastic bags, urging the Legislature to pass the ban in the final 17 days of its session.
Growing momentum for the ban — seen by many as a symbol of broader conservation efforts to control ocean pollution — comes as more than 50 cities including Solana Beach have taken similar steps despite legal threats and lawsuits from pro-bag groups.
Bill would suspend vehicle fee for call boxes
The obscure but generously funded agency that manages roadside yellow call boxes would see its funding suspended and more than $9 million of its reserves split among local governments for public safety under legislation planned by two lawmakers.
